Oceanographer Robert Ballard dives deep into the waters of the harbor to find the remains of a Japanese sub and closely examine the famous wreckage of the USS Arizona. They looked at training, family life, background, etc. The viewer visits a " wet trainer" at Sub School to see what these submariners must endure before they ever climb inside one of these remarkable ships. Who are these men, who live confined in a steel tube deep in the ocean for months at a time, surrounded by a hostile environment, in constant danger? What do they do and why do they do it?

An account of Dr. Robert D. Ballard's exploration of the wreck of the Britannic in September 1995. Britannic, the sister-ship of the Titanic, was sunk after a mysterious explosion while serving as a hospital ship during World War One. Ballard sets out to relocate the wreck and attempts to prove once and for all whether it was a German mine or torpedo which inflicted the fatal damage.

On May 6, 1937, the German airship Hindenburg burst into flames, killing 35; the Hindenburg left Frankfurt, Germany, on May 3 for a journey to Lakehurst Naval Air Station in New Jersey; as the airship attempted to moor, it suddenly caught fire.
