Malgré les difficultés économiques, l'homme continue d'entretenir une vie noble, vivant dans un hôtel et servi par le fedele Battista. Poussé par un créancier non payé, comme Bernasconi, il est condamné parce qu'il a falsifié la garantie d'un billet à ordre à échéance et évidemment découvert.
