An ace fighter pilot captain expects to get leave, but instead is ordered to Washington, where a colonel explains that mounting casualties among fighter pilots require new, battle-tested tactics in combat. The captain sets out to train a group of young and relatively inexperienced pilots in the new methods. Fighter planes are used as both attack aircraft and as escorts for heavy bombers, and a variety of flight patterns and defensive and offensive maneuvers are explained to the young pilots.

Bernard Lefrancois is a prosperous farmer on the River Marne, while his neighbor is impoverished. Lefrancois objects strongly to the romance between his son and the neighbor's daughter, but it continues in secret. WWI begins and the son becomes an aviator with the French army, and the unwed girl presents Lefrancois with an unexpected grandchild. The German army occupies the area, and the girl is serving France as a spy and securing information needed by the French to drive out the Germans. While his son is engaged in air-combat against the Germans, and the unwed mother of his grandchild is serving as a spy against their country's enemy, Lefrancois also joins the battle as a soldier.

Since the uprising of a pro Russian insurgency in eastern Ukraine in 2014, hundreds of women joined the army. Only a few made it to the front line. Filmmaker Masha embeds herself in the war zone to follow the daily life of three of them. By sharing the intimacy of these fighters, Masha soon becomes a victim of this brotherhood conflict jeopardizing this film and her life.

Set in wartime Sichuan, the film follows young widow Xia Qiuyue, who receives news of her husband's death just as the Anti-Japanese War ends. As she rebuilds her life, two men enter her world: her mute brother-in-law Tusheng and A Long, a fellow soldier and her husband's close friend. Tensions rise as both men fall for her, while A Long is also loved by her sister-in-law, Xiaohua. Just as peace seems possible, war returns, and both men volunteer to fight, each willing to sacrifice himself for love and brotherhood.

The Uprising shows us the Arab revolutions from the inside. It is a multi- camera, first-person account of that fragile, irreplaceable moment when life ceases to be a prison, and everything becomes possible again.
