Lovrinci, Eastern Croatia, 1991. Kuzma Glavan, a middle-aged carpenter struggling to provide for his sickly mother, starts a relationship with the much younger Ana Šokčević, a teacher at the village school. The parents of both parties object to this relationship, however, they persist and soon their whirlwind romance results in marriage. However, their seemingly idyllic family life is thwarted when the ethnic conflicts between Croats and Serbs in the area start growing violent.
