Gonzalo's life has been marked by the story of his mother, a Mambisa heroine of the war of 1895. After her death, he is sent to Spain. In 1931, he returns to Cuba to reclaim the family possessions and discovers the value of love and death, truth and lies, pain and hatred.

Backed by a high energy Latin soundtrack, Cucu's journey is a visual love poem to the sites, sounds, and people of Cuba.

The plot, set in Havana in the last period of Fulgencio Batista's dictatorship, follows a young girl whose aspirations to obtain a scholarship in America, against the odds, are paralleled with her reading of Ernest Hemingway's "The Old Man and the Sea".

Based on the life of Benny Moré, the film concentrates on a period in the early 1950s when Moré leaves the orchestra of Duany and starts his own 'Banda Gigante'. In flashback we learn of his success in Mexico. Moré is caught in the events connected to Batista's coup in Cuba. Also, he tours Venezuela, where he suffers the machinations of a vengeful businessman. After collapsing and being hospitalised, Moré swears off alcohol. Some years later, he encounters his old band-mate Monchy, fallen on hard times.

Like her mother before her, beautiful Sissy wants to be a dancer at the Tropicana, Havana's famous cabaret. But her father, Candido, forbids her to do so because of his ongoing grudge against Armando, his former rival and choreographer at the nightclub.

Rodrigo, a famous European artist, comes to Cuba to create a collage using photos of one hundred Cuban artists. Wanting the photos to reflect the anguish inherent in the creative process, he can think of nothing better than hiring the worker Nicanor O’Donnell to punch the one hundred artists in the face for a fee of five euros per head. Knowing that the collage will be exhibited all over the world, the artists line up to be beaten. Nicanor, who at first believes he has stumbled upon the deal of his life, is dismayed to discover that he must hit elderly people, women, artists he admires…

The killing of a fiery young teacher sets Detective Mario Conde on the trail of a drug kingpin with ties to the high school he once attended.

Lorenzo, a Cuban policeman specializing in grave robberies is sent to Havana to investigate the death of a Havana-born German national, Hermann (or German in Spanish) found in a famous grave. Lorenzo recounts his findings to the police chief (Major Anancio) as he investigates Dora, an elevator operator and Herrmann's landlady, Aguila and Silvia (who work for Cultural Affairs), Chrissy (a British-born Socialist Internationalist lover), Xiomara (Hermann's mother and a local drag queen as well), a dwarf, and a false Guatemalan who had raped Chrissy during her internationalist "love/sex campaign" in Guatemala. These are the main, but not the only characters, one must absolutely follow to make sense of the plot.

1964, in the Escambray mountains: the area is infested with counter- revolutionary bands which are trying to spread terror among the population and re-establish contact with the US, CIA. The murder of a man led to a reprisal to wipe out the bandits.

A choral story where characters of different statuses and generations cross paths in an attempt to find happiness and alleviate the loneliness that crushes some of them. In a 12-storey building, neighbors and newcomers intersect, and in these encounters the destiny of some will be twisted and that of others will take better paths. A few blocks away, in another building, two septuagenarians struggle to get the company of a couple who are in a fight against the clock for a few square meters.

Barbara is about to travel to Spain for an exhibition of her paintings. The night before starting her journey there is a hurricane and she has to stay in a nightclub until the morning. During the night she comes into contact with different people who have a variety of conflicts and interests. She is drawn into this microcosm which seems to be a reflection of Cuban society today.
