In the midst of the wedding party of Prince Ruslan and Ludmila, daughter of Prince Vladimir, the girl is kidnapped by the evil sorcerer Chernomor and the witch Naina. Three of her past suitors set out, as does Ruslan, to rescue Ludmila.
Shurik, a kind but naïve ethnography student, falls in love with the intelligent, athletic and beautiful All-Union Leninist Young Communist League member Nina. He has a rival in the wealthy comrade Saakhov, who concocts a kidnapping scheme to force Nina to marry him.
Plot revolves around the post-war decades and tells about the fate of former participants of the Great Patriotic War - Vera Boglyuk, Nina Verkhovskaya, Dusya Koroleva, Zina Skvortsova and Natasha Druzhinina.
This film is based on the classic novel of the same name by writer Ivan Franko, one of the most famous figures of Ukrainian literature. It is set during the 1200s and the invasion of the medieval Ukrainian-Russian state of Rus' by Chengis Khan's Golden Horde. Due to its having been produced during the Soviet era, the story's aspect of class-conflict between the "heroic" peasantry and the "decadent" noble particularly emphasized here.

The story follows Maria Konovalova who travels from her rural village to visit her daughter Nina in the city. Maria's arrival exposes the stark contrasts between rural and urban lifestyles and reveals deep-seated family tensions. Interestingly, Родня (Rodnya) in Russian sounds very similar to the word Родина (Rodina), which means "Motherland." The film features three generations of women — Maria, her daughter Nina, and her granddaughter Irina — symbolizing three different Russias: one from the past, one modern, and one representing the future.

The movie takes place in the first years after the Bolshevik coup in Donbas. Bandits blow up the bridge that carries ore to the blast furnace, the director of the plant is seriously wounded. The workers unanimously elect Ivan Klyavin, a mining foreman, as acting director. In search of the missing train with bread Klyavin gets to Petrograd. Here the hero meets Lenin. Returning to the factory, Klyavin reads to the workers a letter from the leader of the party. Enemies kill Klyavin, but are no longer able to prevent the factory workers from successfully overcoming the devastation.

Musicologist Alla Arsenyeva arrives in Tadjikistan on a mission. Her goal is to find a unique white grand piano, known to be made in France in the nineteenth century. Rumours say it was last seen in the republic’s capital Dushanbe. The local authorities, however, are uncooperative and do whatever they can to thwart her efforts, attempting to make the rare instrument national property. But Alla persists, assisted by her new friends, the celebrated composer J.J. Ahmedov, his young colleague Shodi, the charming Lola and the old woman Roziya-Bibi.
Once in the fierce winter, student Roger McKay forced the shopkeeper to distribute food supplies to the Indians. Hiding from justice, the hero meets Neyda in a remote land - an orphan, brought up in the family of a merchant of stolen whiskey, who wants to quickly marry her to a rich neighbor. Roger and Neyda, having fallen in love with each other, decide to secretly get married and leave these places. But Roger is justified - and the hero, along with his beloved, returns to his house.
