The O. Henry Playhouse was an early American anthology television series which featured television adaptations of short stories written by 19th-century author O. Henry and primarily set in New York City. The series was both hosted and narrated by Thomas Mitchell, who portrayed the title character, and featured several television and film stars during its run such as DeForest Kelley, Lisa Montell, Otto Kruger, Max Showalter and Ernest Borgnine. The series was syndicated and initially ran from January 23 to May 25, 1957, and its final episode aired on November 19 of that year.

The film is set in the United States in the early 20th century. Andy Tucker and Jefferson Peters are noble crooks. They do not engage in violent theft of valuables from citizens. Jeff's principle is to always give something in return for the money received, "be it a fake gold medallion, garden flower seeds, ointment for a gunshot wound, stock certificates, flea powder, or at least a slap." They devise scams to earn money and fulfill their dreams. Andy Tucker wants to open a library, and Jeff Peters wants to return to his home state of Utah and meet his first love.

Mrs. Hardluck has a wealth of hair, but no decorative comb for her hair. What is worse, finances are low, or rather exhausted. An idea strikes Hardluck. He will pawn his watch and buy a comb; thus surprising her. Mrs. Hardluck's mind is also illumined by a bright thought. She will sacrifice her hair, and with the money buy him a fob. This they do, of course, unknown to each other. Well, here's the situation: He had no fob for his watch, and she no comb for her hair; but now he has no watch for his fob, and she has no hair for her comb. Mack Sennett appears as an extra in this film produced by the Biograph Company.
