The main event was a UFC Heavyweight Championship bout between the current champion Cain Velasquez and top contender Junior dos Santos. The two have split their two previous encounters with Dos Santos winning the first bout via first round knockout and then Velasquez winning the rematch via unanimous decision at UFC 155.

UFC Fight Night 64: Gonzaga vs. Cro Cop 2 was a mixed martial arts event held on April 11, 2015 at the Tauron Arena Kraków in Kraków, Poland. The main event featured a heavyweight rematch between Gabriel Gonzaga and returning veteran Mirko Cro Cop, who last fought in the organization at UFC 137 in 2011. Gonzaga won their first encounter at UFC 70 in 2007 via knockout due to a first round head kick which has become one of the most famous and replayed finishes in UFC history.

UFC 60: Hughes vs. Gracie was a mixed martial arts event held by the Ultimate Fighting Championship on May 27, 2006. Headlining the card was a non-title catch-weight (175 lb) match between Matt Hughes, former UFC Welterweight Champion, and Royce Gracie, the champion of UFC 1, UFC 2 and UFC 4. This was Gracie's first match in the UFC and in the United States since UFC 5.

UFC Fight Night 86: Rothwell vs. Dos Santos was a mixed martial arts event held on April 10, 2016, at the Arena Zagreb in Zagreb, Croatia. A heavyweight bout between Ben Rothwell and former UFC Heavyweight Champion Junior dos Santos served as the event headliner.

UFC 121: Lesnar vs. Velasquez was a mixed martial arts event held by the Ultimate Fighting Championship on October 23, 2010 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, United States.

UFC on Fox 13: Dos Santos vs. Miocic was a mixed martial arts event held at U.S. Airways Center in Phoenix, Arizona, on December 13, 2014. The fight card was headlined by a heavyweight bout between Junior dos Santos and Stipe Miocic.

UFC 70 was the second UFC event held in the United Kingdom, and the first in Manchester. The first UFC event in the UK was UFC 38: Brawl at the Hall on July 13, 2002. UFC 70 was also only the seventh UFC event held outside the United States, and the first since UFC 38. 2006 PRIDE Open-Weight Grand Prix Champion, Mirko Cro Cop fought Heavyweight contender Gabriel Gonzaga in the main event to determine the top contender for the UFC Heavyweight Championship held by Randy Couture.

The Ultimate Fighter: Team McGregor vs. Team Faber Finale (also known as The Ultimate Fighter 22 Finale) was a mixed martial arts event held on December 11, 2015, at The Chelsea at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event was headlined by a featherweight bout between former UFC Lightweight champion Frankie Edgar and three-time title challenger Chad Mendes.

The Ultimate Fighter: Team Jones vs. Team Sonnen Finale (also known as The Ultimate Fighter 17 Finale) was a mixed martial arts event held by the Ultimate Fighting Championship. It took place on April 13, 2013 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. The main event featured a bout between the former WEC Featherweight Champion Urijah Faber and long time bantamweight contender Scott Jorgensen.

UFC 96: Jackson vs. Jardine a mixed martial arts event held by the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). It was held in Columbus, Ohio on March 7, 2009 at Nationwide Arena. The card was headlined by a Light Heavyweight bout between Quinton Jackson and Keith Jardine. Following the main event, Rashad Evans, training partner of Jardine and then-Light Heavyweight Champion, entered the cage and publicly challenged Jackson. It resulted in a long-standing feud between the two that would not be settled until 2010.
