Classic Albums: The Chirping Crickets
7.2

Among the first half-dozen debuts by rock ’n’ roll’s original founders, more significantly it was the first rock album credited to a band rather than a solo artist, as well as a landmark in the history of independent recording methods. Crowned by four of Holly and The Crickets’ best-loved and biggest-selling singles - That’ll Be the Day, Not Fade Away, Maybe Baby and Oh, Boy! - The Chirping Crickets was one of only two albums Buddy Holly recorded in his tragically brief career.

The festival encompassed Midsummer's Day, and in true medieval tradition, the area of Worthy Farm, Pilton was given over to music, dance, poetry, theatre, spontaneous entertainment and nudity.

Richard Thompson: 1000 Years of Popular Music
N/A

The album was originally conceived after Richard Thompson, along with many other artists, was asked by Playboy magazine to nominate his choice of the best songs of the last 1000 years. He took them exactly at their word and served up a list that included the oldest-known English-language songs, a medieval Italian dance tune and various other folk songs alongside slightly more contemporary fare. The list was never published by Playboy; it was subsequently released into CD format. The songs comprising the track list cover a roughly thousand-year period, 1068–2001, starting with "Sumer Is Icumen In". The most recent song included on the album is Britney Spears' hit "Oops!... I Did It Again".

The first half of the show focuses on Richard’s recent “Dream Attic” album with the second half given over to songs reaching back as far as his debut solo release “Henry The Human Fly” and up to more recent projects such as “Sweet Warrior” and “The Old Kit Bag”. Thompson’s distinctive voice and unmistakable guitar style are well to the fore and, as ever, his band are as good as it gets.
