Charlie Simms is a student at a private preparatory school who comes from a poor family. All of Europe was affected by the Great Depression of the 1930s, but some parts were hurt less badly than others. France, for instance, was relatively prosperous. In this grim drama, a sturdy Polish boxer and his family have settled into a mining town in northern France because that's where the work is. Like European "guest workers" in the 1990s, the Polish immigrants then were frequently treated badly by the locals. In this drama, the romantic aspirations of the boxer's son are thwarted by the concerted efforts of the local men and his own family's preference that he marry another Polish girl. After his romance fails, the son becomes a union activist and sacrifices a great deal to try to gain higher wages for the miners, but the contract he works out is reneged on by the duplicitous owners.

In 1930, on the island of Noronha in Brazil, the inmates of the penitentiary revolt. Frédéric Coulibaud, head of the aeropostale radio station, and his team-mates Mastic and Froment, try to prevent them from entering the concession where the island's governor and his daughter have taken refuge. They manage to repair the radio so as to follow and guide Mermoz as he attempts to cross the South Atlantic for the 53rd time. The aviator is forced to ditch and is picked up by a boat. Their mission accomplished, Coulibaud and his team boarded a British ship that had come to their rescue.

City Lights would not be a talking picture, but it would have a soundtrack. Chaplin personally composed a musical score and sound effects for the picture. With Peter Lord, the famous co-creator of Chicken Run and Wallace & Gromit, we see how Chaplin became the king of slapstick comedy and the superstar of the movies.

One of the first (and perhaps therefore ambiguous) approaches to homosexuality in Spain at the time. The film narrates in cinematographic form the problem of the third sex, its justification and its existence within a real environment that is society itself. Two parallel worlds are shown to us; one, the hard and professional life of some artists who try to put on a 'music-hall' show. The other world is independent but it shows us what the life of an old glory was like, of an old man who was an artist in his time. Comparing one era with another is the intention of the film and ultimately its plot.
