In 1920s China, 19-year-old Songlian becomes a concubine of a powerful lord and is forced to compete with his three wives for the privileges gained.

An old leper who owned a remote sorghum winery dies. Jiu'er, the wife bought by the leper, and her lover, identified only as "my Grandpa" by the narrator, take over the winery and set up an idealized quasi-matriarchal community headed by Jiu'er. When the Japanese invaders subject the area to their rule and cut down the sorghum to make way for a road, the community rises up and resists as the sorghum grows anew.

The film establishes his chivalrous image through scenes like Dong Erbo caring for the daughter of the murderer of his father, writing a certificate of indebtedness in blood to a robber, and freeing a young man who accidentally killed a relative. He takes in and protects an orphan swordsman, ultimately dying during a crackdown by government troops. The film uses a rugged visual language to depict the desolate geography of the West, and through the portrayal of these chivalrous men who relentlessly avenge their enemies, it conveys the philosophy that "the sword cannot subdue anyone."

A woman inherits her father's fireworks factory, as he had no son. The business does well and everything works in an orderly fashion until one day, an itinerant painter is hired to decorate the doors and vases at the factory. The woman, forbidden to marry and thereby involve outsiders in the factory ownership, finds herself drawn to the headstrong painter. When they fall in love, the situation throws her entire life into disarray
