Su Tong

In 1920s China, 19-year-old Songlian becomes a concubine of a powerful lord and is forced to compete with his three wives for the privileges gained.

In 1930s Shanghai, young Su Xian is raised by her single mother, Hui. A chance encounter with film company owner Boss Meng changes Su Xian's life, as he exploits her innocence and dreams of stardom, only to abandon her when war strikes, leaving her pregnant. Devasted, Hui dies in sorrow, and Su Xian's only hope is her daughter, Su Zhi. By the 1950s, Su Zhi has grown up and fallen in love with her classmate, Zou Jie, but their relationship faces obstacles due to their complicated family backgrounds.

Zhang Ziyi plays the youngest of three generations of women who leads lives in Shanghai. Joan Chen plays the great-grandmother, grandmother, and mother. The film recounts this family, the mistakes they make, and a cycle that the granddaughter breaks out of.

The film charts the fortunes of two women who loved each other as sisters, but whose paths diverge when the Revolution brings an end to their old way of life in the brothel.
