Vandana's husband, Arun, gets killed in an air crash after they secretly get married but no one accepts their marriage. Thereafter, she is forced to put her child up for adoption and later work as his nanny to stay by his side.

Sita Sinha has brought up her son, Bihari and his friend, Amar as her own. The three are very close to each other. When they grow up they maintain their friendship and love for each other. Amar marries wealthy Jaya, and Bihari marries a labourer. Amar's dad, Mr. Saxena does not like Bihari, and schemes to separate them. He succeeds, and Bihari is humiliated. Vishal (Rishi Kapoor) comes from a wealthy Hindu family. His father is well known Chandraprakash Singh (Amrish Puri), and his mom is a housewife, Sharda (Asha Parekh). Vishal falls in love with a young Catholic girl, Ruby Miranda (Farha). While Ruby's dad (Alok Nath) approves of the marriage, Chandraprakash does not, and will not even hear of his son marrying someone not of equal status in wealth, leave alone a different religion. Upon arrival at Madhu Villa, Heena is met by Sonu's brother, Laalu, and their paternal uncle. Days turn into weeks and weeks turn into months and still Sonu has not arrived. Quite unknown to Heena, Sonu has no brothers nor even any uncles. The two masquerading are actually two escaped convicts, one of who is awaiting the death sentence, and there no guarantee that Sonu may ever return to live with her.

When Ramnath goes to fetch a doctor, he is knocked down and run over by a speeding car, losing the use of his left leg. When he returns from hospital, he finds that his mom has passed away, and his landlord has evicted him. Penniless and hungry, he roams the streets of Bombay and befriends a blind young man, Mohan, and both use their talents - playing and harmonica and singing respectively to earn some money. Mohan is on the look-out for his sister, Meena, who works as a Nurse in one of the hospitals and hopes to be reunited with her. Both friends befriend a ailing young girl, Manjula, and hope to get some money from her so that Ramnath can attend school.
