Tyrannical and wealthy Veer Pratap Singh, rules over a small town - ruthlessly. Whoever opposes him is crushed. He is attracted to women, and has a lengthy affair with Soundariya, and even has a secret marriage ceremony with her. When Soundariya gets pregnant, he asks her to abort the child. When she refuses, he shuns her, and denies ever having married her or even being intimate with her. Her brothers attempt to get justice, but are dealt with ruthlessly by Pratap Singh's bodyguard, Bhima. Soundariya then must garner support of herself, and must find someone who can stand up to Veer Pratap Singh and end his tyranny, in a town with men who have been subdued for eons by Veer Pratap Singh and his men for eons.

Ajay Nath comes from a wealthy family, and is prone to playing practical jokes and pranks in order to get his way with this mother and father. In one case he asked one of their family doctors', Dr. Panjabi, to lie to his dad that he has cancer, so that he can accompany his college friends to a outing to Kashmir. He falls in love with fellow collegian Geeta Chopra, who is in love with Shyam. But Ajay's dad, fooled by his illness convinces her to be kind to him, and she becomes friendly with Ajay, both eventually fall in love with each other and want to get married. Then their family gets the news that Ajay really has cancer and has only a few more months to live. Under the changed circumstances, both the Nath and Chopra families are against the marriage of Ajay and Geeta. Will Ajay and Geeta get married? Does Ajay really have cancer or is this another prank?

Architect and Poet Salim Ahmed Salim lives in Nizamuddin, India, along with his widowed mother. He re-locates to Lucknow where he is employed with Shirazi & Company. He instructs her not to leave the house, and when she persists, he sells the house and decides to re-locate to Lahore, Pakistan. Salim attempts to stop them but Hamid assaults him and leaves him senseless. Salim does recover but takes to alcohol and a Courtesan named Phoolrani in a big way. His mother intervenes, and compels him to get married to their new neighbor's daughter, Sahira, which he reluctantly does. Now trapped in a marriage with a woman he does not love, Salim continues to frequent Phoolrani's brothel, with hopes of being re-united with his estranged sweetheart - only to find that the seemingly demure Sahira will not let go of him that easily.

Gauri lives with her crippled ex-army dad and brother. One day she notices a man calling himself Ranjeet lurking around their house. What she doesn't know is that Ranjeet is here for a reason--the suitcase of gold he had buried in Gauri's front yard.

Circumstances have made Shaka a career criminal. When plague empties a town of its inhabitants, he takes the opportunity to burgle a house. He finds nothing except Shanti, a widowed daughter-in-law who has been left to die by her cruel relatives. Shaka nurses her back to health. Arjun Yadav return from the city after completing his studies to get settled in his village with his family consisting of his mother Devi Chaudaran, his older brother Amrit and sister. Arjun finds out that Amrit and Thakur Bhanwar Singh does not get along quiet well and attempts to be a peace-maker between the two. One day situation takes a turn for the worse when Amrit is killed, Devi Chaudaran loses her senses, Arjun's sister is raped and he himself is beaten and tied to a tree. Arjun is then rescued by some sympathetic villagers and run off with his childhood friend Makan Malla in the deep ravines only to turn an outlaw whose only motive is to avenge the killings of his family members.

Amar and Prem, college friends, and Asha and Shobana form friendships. Marriages are arranged, but dowry demands a US ticket. Prem returns, becomes office predator, and Asha endures harassment to pay off debts.

Private Resham Singh is employed by the Indian Armed Forces and sent to the battle-front under the command of Major Balwant Rai. They find themselves outnumbered and are ordered to retreat at all costs. But Balwant refuses to obey, and both put up a successful resistance. Years later, he will meet Resham Singh again - but this time it will be a different Resham - far different from the compassionate and loyal one he had met at the front - this one is cold-blooded, heartless, has brutally killed three men, and is out seeking a fourth - who is none other than Balwant's son, Ravi. Will Balwant assist or prevent Resham from killing Ravi, watch as events unfold that will change Balwant's life forever.

Dr. Gautamdas (Rajinder Kumar) attains his qualifications in London, England, and with the blessings of Lord Bertrand Russell (himself), returns to his home country and his dad (Balraj Sahni). Much to the disappointment of his dad, Dr. Gautamdas decides to re-locate to Japan, which has been devastated by the explosion of atom bombs on two of it's cities - Hiroshima and Nagasaki. There he meets with other doctors, and is given a tour of the patients and their families, and other survivors (Om Prakash, Chand Usmani, Baby Kavita). {Graphic scenes of the atrocities inflicted on innocent people} On a chance meeting with the beautiful Meloda (Saira Banu) he knows that they are destined to be one, and so does she. Meloda's dad is also a doctor (Chetan Anand). Meloda had studied in India and speaks Hindi fluently. Both fall in love amongst the splendour of Japan.

Photographer Raj Bedi meets with attractive Radha, both fall in love, and get married. Shortly after the marriage, Raj has an accident and is hospitalized. He does recover, but has no sensation in his legs and must be confined to a wheelchair. The cost of his treatment, in addition to the loss of his job, leads Radha to take up employment as a Governess to a small child, the only daughter of wealthy industrialist, Ashok Mehra. Raj is quite happy at this arrangement and looks forward to his treatment locally, and subsequently abroad. What he does not know that Ashok's deceased wife resembles Radha, that his daughter, Mini, thinks that Mom has finally returned home; and that this was prime reason that Radha was ever hired by Mehra and his associates. Will Radha take to the comfortable life as the wealthy Mrs. Mehra, in addition to getting a cute little daughter for her own self?

Gauri, an orphan, is falsely accused of theft and lands up in a reformatory run by Ashok. Due to her rebelliousness, she gets into trouble. But, gradually she comes into her own with Ashok's help.
