A 'runaway' homeless man, once a renowned athlete, finds himself marooned in the small, snow-covered town of Zarechensk. Victor lands a job at an orphanage, where he soon meets a young teacher who becomes both a compassionate friend and the love of his life. However, fate doesn't play out simply as good or bad; it unfolds in a way that makes the hero realize one cannot run away from oneself. Consequently, it is in Zarechensk that a train carrying a film crew from the capital, on their way back to Moscow, is compelled to delay their journey for a few days. Remarkably, Zarechensk becomes the place where a director finally discovers the perfect actress for his leading role and encounters a man who has fled from her love. Meanwhile, a producer makes the ultimate decision to select this town as the filming location for her upcoming movie.

In 1953, the year Stalin died, many prisoners (some political, but mostly common criminals) were released from the Soviet Gulags. This is the story of a remote settlement which was under attack by a bunch of these recently-released blood-thirsty thugs in the summer of 1953, and the townspeople, along with a two political prisoners, who try to stop them.

1918. A Red Army soldier Fyodor Krohov, authorized to withdraw farmers corn surpluses, comes to a small village, where White Guard can show up any day. He must persuade peasants to hand over the surpluses. But men are hesitating, some lend an ear to a wealthy peasant Mokey Zhlobin, unwilling to give away his hided corn. The only one person, backing up Fyodor is a local self-made inventor, living in the outskirts with his beloved beauty-wife, having equipped his house with electricity, power-saw bench and other gimmicks. The inventor takes him as a close friend and his young wife falls in love with Fyodor. The love triangle appears, but their ideals are above all. Together they manage to find the hidden corn and survive in uneven battle with bandits who rushed into a village.

In the deep Russian provinces, among the vast steppes of the Ural escaped convict Yemelyan Pugachev proclaimed himself Emperor Peter III of Russia. Under the banner of the Pretender embarked detachments of Cossacks, fugitive serfs, and many spirited people. In these troubled times in the God-forsaken Belogorsk young officer Pyotr Grinyov meets his first love - Masha, the daughter of Captain Mironov. Recklessly passionate love with each other did not want to notice the signs of impending trouble. They did not know that soon they will be an ordeal. A junior employee of the Forest Research Institute is sent to collect mushrooms. In the forest, he meets a strange old woman, receives a silver horn and a magic club as a gift from her, and after some time ends up in prison as a counterfeiter. His connections with the mysterious old woman do not end there.

Set around the Volga river, the story begins around 1900, when Russian peasants are let free and allowed to own their farmlands. But soon they suffer from losses during the 1917 Russian Revolution and the following Civil War. Then, the major national catastrophe is started by Stalin: his communist government kills millions of farmers and steals all their food supplies, causing the longest and deadliest famine all over central Russia during the 1920s and 1930s.

A successful Moscow doctor, who has his own clinic, comes to his father in Minsk. His father was once one of the leading doctors of the city, and now he turned out to be unnecessary and forgotten. His son helps him start a new business. But it turns out that the father's worst enemy is his most reliable girlfriend.
