Twelve-year-old Sasha is forced to leave Moscow for Pyatigorsk to live with his aunt while his doctor parents are on assignment in Africa. Local children, school bullying, and conflict with the leader, Marat, become part of his new life. When his parents disappear during a flood, the boy faces utter despair. On New Year's Eve, a not-so-lucky thief, Misha, breaks into a house in the very center of Moscow, where a lonely old man lives. Misha hopes to improve his unenviable financial situation and bring back his family - his wife and seven-year-old daughter. However, in the old man's big house, he finds nothing of any value, except for the deposits of children's toys in the basement. The old man himself assures him that he is none other than the real Father Frost.
