An inspector who just suffered a family tragedy is looking for a missing older man. Man's family is of no help, or are they hiding something? He is helped by a ghost of an actress who died 30 years ago, or is he slowly going insane?
The story of the mystical world of a young Mevlevi dervish who witnesses the emotional relationship between two young members of the palace, amid the efforts of a handful of people seeking peace in Istanbul in the days leading up to the 1798 Ottoman-French war. The dervish, who is responsible for keeping the Mevlevi records, is also in the service of Nuri Dede Efendi, a former Ottoman pasha. Dede Efendi and some of his old friends, who are French diplomats, are trying to prevent the impending war. This unofficial effort is being carried out at Sahilsaray, which belongs to Beyhan Sultan, the sister of Sultan Selim III. A bond develops between Halil, the court physician accompanying Dede Efendi during the diplomatic negotiations, and GĂĽlnihal Kalfa, Beyhan Sultan's assistant. The young dervish who accompanies Dede Efendi to Sahilsaray brings a notebook filled with pages that blend the story he has witnessed in its entirety with passages reflecting the teachings of Mevlana...

Despite his lifelong efforts, Jean is one of those unfortunate men who can never understand women. This arty, metaphorical French film presents three examples of Jean's difficulties over the course of his long life. Each of the three episodes takes place beside the same river. He is first seen as a small boy playing on the river banks with the teenage girl he secretly loves. She mischievously promises to tell him her darkest secret if only he will perform a certain task for her. The story then takes a more surreal turn as a now-grown Jean, once again beside the river, toys with a beautiful woman at a picnic. She wants a commitment from him, but wily Jean is unwilling to satisfy her. In the final segment, Jean has become an old man and is once again deeply in love.
