It's pouring rain. Through the open window, a symphony of street noise, angle grinders, and jackhammers drifts in. The siren of an ambulance joins in. A woman is washing dishes. Then the phone rings. An eight-minute phone call with someone who is also washing dishes.

As a small West German family traveling through East Germany, without official permits or prospects. Home not as a geographical report, but as a word for the "all-German" circumstances from which we come: a journey through time.
