Based on the novel by Bhisham Sahni, Tamas is an epic drama set against the backdrop of riot-stricken North India on the eve of Partition in 1947. Nathu, an outcast, is hired to kill a pig, whose carcass he’s later appalled to find in front of the mosque. A riot follows and, ridden with guilt, Nathu takes his ailing mother and pregnant wife and leaves town.

Shakti Singh is a poor, hardworking boiler mechanic who lives a happy life with his wife Seeta, mother, and two sons, Arjun and Vijay. Shakti always falsely fights against injustice. Once he is falsely implicated for this, and he has to go to jail. Seeta is forced to be a courtesan instead of the money owed by Shekhar, so a misunderstanding creates a rift between Shakti and Seeta; insulted Seeta leaves the house. Shakti realises his mistakes, but it's too late; soon, he takes to crime and becomes an underworld don. After some years, his two sons, Arjun, are married to Kajal and Vijay to Aarti. Kajal does not like his father-in-law as he is involved in illegal activities; Arjun is self-employed; Vijay has some bad habits for which he often quarrels with his father. Shakti has enemies and traitors in his business. The situation worsens when Vijay is killed.

Brothers Karan and Kishan are separated when Karan is framed for a murder, leading him to commit suicide. But, he is saved and grows up to become a cop. Years later, Kishan too is framed for a crime.

A ruthless gangster named Don is killed during a scuffle with the police. Since only DSP D'Silva knows of this incident, he recruits Vijay, who is a spitting image of Don, to replace the original Don and infiltrate his gang. Thus Kailash carries out his vengeance against Jagmohan. Now Kailash is faced with advocate Ajay Verma, who has molested his sister, Shilpa. Dr. Indrajeet lives with his mom (Sulochana), and sister, beautiful Sushma (Gayetri).

But when Seema finds out she goes to meet him secretly - a visit that will set off a chain of events that will end up drastically changing their lives forever.
