Prince Klemens von Metternich orders Friedrich Gentz, one of his aides, to keep the Duke of Reichstadt---Napoleon Francois Joseph Charles---son of Napoleon and heir to the French throne, from thinking about French politics. Gentz enlists the help of ballerina Fanny Elsser, all the rage in several European capitals, to keep the Duke distracted.
The good citizens of a small Austrian town are all aquiver; the schoolmaster has published a brochure in which can be read, black on white, the story of the 'dead guest,' in whose embrace the town's prospective brides found death. But worst of all, the writer of the brochure has plausibly concluded that the 'dead guest' will return this very year! From that point on, Tamara appears as "Sikkim Khan" and the "Diamond King" van Houten falls in love with her. On a ship of the South American Line, they meet and get to know each other better. When an emerald worth half a million is stolen, Tamara declares herself to be the thief, so as to protect an old colleague of her father, who wants to save the circus with the money from the stolen jewel.

But then Fritz returns from Soviet captivity, prompting Frieda to divorce Franz. Finally Frieda accepts an inheritance from the USA and marries Fritz. With the money they open up a shoe store.
