The athletic young widow Antoinette Peterson gets into financial troubles when a business venture backfires and has to sell her car and her villa. On the road, she meets a stranger whose car she is able to repair and whom she later meets again as the buyer of her house. It is no one else than the venturer William P. Harrison to whom she lost her whole fortune in the first place. He offers her a bet: If she manages to stay for three months as his chauffeur and behaves accordingly, he would give her back her fortune. Although Harrison makes it as hard as possible for her, she keeps up. But they have already fallen in love with each other.
It is a late work of the German silent film era, conceived as a crime or adventure film and spanning six reels.
The film is based on real events and reveals the tragic episodes from the life of the Austrian biologist scientist-materialist Paul Kammerer (1880-1926), hunted by regressive scientists and Catholic reactionaries who committed suicide.
The plot centers on Ignaz Fischbein, a bullied employee at Strohbach's fashion house, who encounters misfortune at a fairground where he quarrels with Mizzi, who is awaiting her fiancé. A hypnotist named Brahmaputra, played by Albert Paulig, places the pair in a trance for his audience's amusement, causing them to believe they are a newlywed couple. Unable to reverse the hypnosis immediately, Ignaz and Mizzi head to the "Villa Waldfrieden" pension, where chaotic interactions unfold involving Strohbach, Mizzi's jealous fiancé Paul Kasulke (Paul Westermeier), and a retired Russian anarchist (Karl Huszar-Puffy)
During a railway journey, Baron van Geldern meets Evelyne, an attractive young woman travelling in the same carriage. After the train is derailed, they spend a night together at a hotel, and the womanizer falls in love with her. Complications ensue when he discovers that she is engaged to his American friend.
