Marie (Annie Girardot) teaches high school and has a 16-year-old daughter in her class. Divorced some years previously, she has some vague egalitarian notions about friendship with her students and leaves her door open to them. One of her protégés is found beaten up just outside her door, and an emergency physician comes by to treat her. When her daughter starts seeing someone she doesn't much like, and she begins having a brief affair (her first since the divorce) with the ER doctor, she begins to reconsider her policy.

A gifted student, Annie Girardot thought for a while of becoming a nurse, before passing the entrance exam to the Conservatory. She leaves with two first prizes in comedy. In the theater she triumphed in "The Typewriter" by Jean Cocteau. It was Cocteau who made her cut her hair to adopt his famous short cut. The cinema opened its doors and she turned with Pierre Fresnay, then with Jean Gabin, in "Le rouge est mis" by Gilles Grangier. The Comédie-Française then asked her to make a choice. A wealthy businessman risks his fortune to test the love of his beautiful girlfriend.

Shortly before her wedding to her long-time boyfriend and colleague Marc, successful neurosurgeon Judith Weiß falls in love with musician Daniel. However, Daniel is seriously injured in a tragic accident and falls into a coma. All medical efforts fail, and Daniel dies. In order to preserve her love for him beyond death, Judith makes an unusual and momentous decision.
