Kartik (Prashant) on his way to attend a close friend Anand's (Anand), marriage sets eyes on Lakshmi (Kausalya) at a bus stop and falls for her. He with his friends reach the village and Kartik to his delight finds Lakshmi there. He sends her a love letter (as in the title) and then to his horror discovers that Lakshmi was the intended bride of Anand. The matter becomes public, with the whole village going in search of the anonymous letter writer. The scenes where Kartik's friends (Vivek, Damu, Vyapuri) ae mistaken for the senders of the letter and get a sound thrashing in turn, gives some comic relief. The marriage is meanwhile over and it is time to leave. And then Kartik comes out with his confession and makes a public apology to his friend and the family. His gesture is appreciated, the matter settled and the newly weds return to the city.

Ponnar Shankar is based on historical novel written by Kalangir M. Karunanidhi. Story is about the two warriors, both are brothers named Ponner and Sankar living in Kongu Nadu (present day Coimbatore, Erode etc..). This is a historical movie and these two warriors are even worshipped today at most of the above mentioned part of Tamil Nadu.

Murthy (Prashanth) earns his living taking the blame for the mistakes of other people and the jail is his second home. Dhanushkodi (Raghuvaran) has sworn to kill ex-collector Ramanathan's (Vijayakumar) son and so, Ramanathan has transferred his son Santosh (Pravinkanth) to Mauritius while telling the world that he has ran away. Wishing to save his son, he hires Murthy to act as his long lost son, hoping that Dhanushkodi would kill him instead of his actual son. Murthy too accepts the gig since his lover Preeti (Jyotika) is Ramanathan's niece. In the climax, Santhosh supports Dhanushkodi for killing his father, But Dhanushkodi kills Santhosh. The film ends with Murthy taking the blame for killing Santhosh and surrenders himself to police.
