Biography
Devika or Prameela Devi (25 April 1943 – 2 May 2002) was a Tamil and Telugu actress. Devika is the granddaughter of Telugu cinema doyen Raghupathi Venkaiah Naidu. One of her uncles was a Mayor of Chennai. Kanaka is her daughter. In Tamil, she has acted with all major heroes of the day. In Mudhalali, an AVM film, in which she made her debut, she paired with S. S. Rajendran. The film received a certificate as the (Best regional language film) for the year from the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil. She paired with M. G. Ramachandran in Anandha Jodhi. She won accolades from viewers for the role she played in this film. With Sivaji Ganeshan she has acted in films like Karnan, Kulamagal Radhai and Bale Pandiya, pairing with him in the last mentioned film. Her role in Sumaithaangi was very moving. Though she is paired with Gemini Ganesan in this film, the relationship did not culminate in marriage and the end was a tragedy. This was a film by Sridhar. She acted in some other Sridhar films like Nenjam Marappathillai and Nenjil Or Aalayam. The song Sonnadhu Nee thaanaa in Nenjil or Aalayam became a hit because of her acting, apart from the lyrics and music.

The film was launched by C. V. Sridhar in 1980 as a Cinemascope venture and was then titled as Sakthi. Sridhar collaborated with Kamal Haasan after the success of the 1978 film Ilamai Oonjal Aadukirathu, which had also featured Rajinikanth. The film was meant to be the first film which featured Kamal Haasan and Ambika as a lead pair and stills were released featuring Ambika in a swimsuit. The film got delayed and was put on the back burner, before it re-emerged in 1986 under the title of Meendum Suryodayam and shooting progressed. It was planned for an April 1986 release, which got postponed to May 1 of 1986. There was a local authority election in March 1986 and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam won seats. The Hindu god Shiva gives a sacred mango fruit, brought by the sage Narada, to his elder son Vinayaka as a prize for outsmarting his younger brother Muruga in a competition. Angry with his father, Muruga leaves home for Palani. He meets Avvaiyar, one of his devotees, along the way. Despite her attempts to convince Muruga to return to Mount Kailash, he remains adamant about his decision to leave his family. Gopal is arrested. He has an alibi - on the night of the murder, a young woman stayed with him in his house, but then he does not disclose her identity. The woman turns out to be Seetha and she gives them the evidence. One of the members of the jury is her father-in-law and complications follow with the husband leaving her and wishing to marry again. However, the truth comes out and the family is united in the end.

Sri Varada Sri Krishna Yachendra, Zamindar of Mangalapuram writes in his will that his jewelry will be given to the temple. Bhadrachalam temple trustee Dharma Rao, while taking the jewelry, met with an accident and the jewelry disappears. Twenty years roll by, Prabhakar Rao, who was an inspector at the time of the crime, is now police commissioner. Diwan Raja Bhushnam becomes a big industrialist. Trustee Dharma Rao had two sons, Raja Rao and Gopal Rao. Gopal Rao mysteriously meets Radha, daughter of Prabhakar Rao and they fall in love. At a party, Raja Rao behaves against Raja Bhushnam and he is sent to jail. Gopal Rao wants to find out the reason for the injustice done to his brother Raja Rao. He meets Raja Bhushnam and he says that his father had stolen jewelry belonging to the temple and committed suicide. To know the truth, Gopal Rao goes to the commissioner. The rest of the story is how Gopal Rao catches the real culprits and proves his father's innocence.
