Story is set in deep Russia, on a wild river in woods called "Ugrum-reka" - the Moody river. Son of a dishonest trader, Prohor Gromov wants to become his own man. He takes his fathers order and goes trough the woods to deliver the furs to the byer in the nearest town. He tries to take the shorter way and get`s lost. At the highest point of this, his fathers servant, Abdulla, who is sent with him to guard him almost shoots him driven by hunger, but comes to the senses and saves his life by continuing to go on.

Early 20th century. Two village boys, brothers Semyon and Pavel, work as servants for a Moscow merchant. They face harsh exploitation and hard labor. The brothers' paths diverge. Unable to endure the merchant's abuse, Pavel leaves for a factory, becomes a worker, and later a revolutionary. Semyon remains in service. In the post-revolutionary period, Semyon, having served at the front and returned to the village, joins the kulaks and brutally cracks down on representatives of the Soviet government, becoming the leader of a gang of "badgers" hiding in the forests. A Red Army detachment led by Pavel is sent to fight the bandits.

On one of the October nights at the ball, gymnasium pupils and officers scoff at the love of Kuzma Zakharkin, the “cook's son”, to Lena, the daughter of the manufacturer. Cannon volley interrupts the fun. In the city begins the Moscow armed uprising of workers. At the center of the fate of two families is the capitalist Leontyev and the worker Zakharkin, whose sons became the organizers and participants of this uprising.
