An actress preparing to play in a historical epic is terrorized by someone faxing her pages from her stolen diary; has colorful flashbacks of her affair with a now-deceased man; and imagines black-and-white film-within-a-film scenes of the movie she is about to appear in.
When a dying millionaire (Kang Ding) offers a huge financial reward to find his missing granddaughter, the news catches attention of several people: a wandering guitarist A-Wen (Wen Xia) and his sidekick Xiao Wang, as well as two street performers (Tuo Xian and Qiu Wangshe).
A-hsueh and Kang-ting shine shoes, while Ching-mei and Mei-ngo work at a hostess club. When the miserly Mr. Hu buys Mei-ngo a fake diamond ring, a real one is sent by mix-up, while the fake falls into different hands, triggering misunderstandings. To conceal Ching-mei's lie about marrying a manager, the group borrows Hu's mansion and stages a respectable family. Ai-A-Tsai's mustache, slight frame, and exaggerated gestures recall Chaplin, while the master-servant reversal briefly turns Taipei's class order upside down.
