Lê Lựu (12 December 1942 - 9 November 2022) was a Vietnamese writer. He gained prominence in 1986 with “Thời xa vắng” [A time far past], one of the first post-war novels to champion a more emotional, individualistic expressions and desires.
Known For

Sai is forced to marry Tuyet at the age of ten and leaves his home by the river wharf to live with an old man named Kien. As the war against France accelerates, Sai enlists to fight and falls in love with another woman named Huong. While the affair is fated not to last, Tuyet struggles to keep her marriage together.
A Time Far Past

Núi is the son of a concubine in a wealthy family in 1960s Hai Phòng. Rejected by his father, Núi and his siblings face numerous hardships. As the war breaks out, they are sent to their maternal grandparents, in whose upbringing Núi’s life spirals into crimes and violence.
Waves at the Bottom of the River

Discharged from the Army after losing an arm in the battlefield, Lê Vân returns home. He seeks to help rebuild it, but realises that a life spent fighting has made him disconnected from the villagers and their ideas.
