In a large fish export company, the general manager's talented son Hugo holds a trusted position. When one day 500 kroner is missing from the cash register, speculation begins about who the culprit might be. Greengrocer Olsen is a happy man, completely satisfied with the lot he has been allotted in life. When he is drawn as a juror in the case against the general manager of the fish export company, he is beside himself: he has no idea. But who is the culprit anyway?

The heavy prison door in Vridsløse opens, and freedom beckons once again to counterfeiter P. Krone-Strøm. He has served an eight-year sentence, but believes it was a miscarriage of justice. He was one of the many who could not find employment during the crisis years of the 1930s in Denmark. Now he is once again in contact with the world outside the prison walls, but conditions have changed completely during the years he has spent in isolation. Now it is not money that is lacking in society, but labor and goods.

A fictional character, Rasmus Nielsen, travels around the country, first as a traveling teacher, later in other positions, and through his experiences we are introduced to the conditions of various population groups. The central figure in the portrayal of historical figures is the politician Orla Lehmann.

Grete Hansen is looking for work at "Morgenbladet". Here she meets the womanizer Vilmer, who wants Grete to meet him on her first night out on the town, and Bob, a young man who plays private detective. When Bob reads that there are a number of counterfeit 100 kroner notes in circulation, Bob and Grete decide to catch the thief. First they break into the home of a policeman whom they suspect of being a counterfeiter. Later they play servants at the home of another suspect. Then Grete discovers something suspicious about Vilmer - she follows him to a spooky house.

An unsuccessful animal impersonator wants publicity and feeds an overly eager journalist a story. The impersonator says he is going to Africa to roar like a lion, and people believe him. The front-page sensation spreads to the foreign press, and in the end, the poor liar has to take out his savings and travel to Africa to prove that the lie was true enough.

In a boarding house in the inner city lives Flora - a fresh Copenhagen girl with a burning dream: She wants to be a journalist. Accompanied by loud gramophone music, the typewriter clatters far into the night. But it is not easy to sell stories to the busy press, and Flora has only one last idea that can secure the rent: An interview with shipowner Olivarius, who has bought a precious Chinese statuette. But nothing goes as Flora expects, and soon she is on the hunt for a dramatic robbery story and - not least - in love with the suspected thief!

Middelmand, a former tax cutter, is the protagonist of a moral drama that illustrates the consequences of evading his contribution to public spending. His wife is discharged from the hospital; his son is thrown out of school; as fire breaks out in his home, he discovers that the water has been closed, etc.
