Biography

Ricardo Jabardo (1962, Caracas, Venezuela) is a Venezuelan filmmaker, animator, and visual artist. He earned a degree in Communication Arts from the Universidad Católica Andrés Bello (UCAB) in 1976 and later completed an MFA in Fine Arts at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1994. Since 1989, he has lived in the United States, where he has worked in film, television, and multimedia design.

This is the first of Diego Risquez’ trilogy of avant-garde cinematic treatments of historical subjects. Using a painterly style, it features portraits, still lifes, and scenes shot as tableaux vivants, the film provides an experimental interpretation of the arrival of the Spanish and their domination of the New World, as well as the Venezuelan Independence movement, focusing on the role of Simón Bolívar. There is no dialogue or narration, simply a musical score and the depiction of events from Bolívar’s career.

Fetos is an allegory of the process of life. What would happen if a fetus became conscious in its mother's womb? It would interpret its' surroundings as its only reality. If he found another fetus, his twin brother, he would explain to him what he has learned. If later a third fetus appeared who did not agree with the other two that the womb is the only reality, and it proposed a different possibility. The first two fetuses would reject it. Only the one that understood the process would be born. In order to be born it is necessary to die.

Rosario lives alone in the slums (barrio) with her dog Ringo. She always wanted to be a truck driver but her mother never let her. One day she bought three miraculous prints from the " Lady in Black", who was initiated into the mysteries of "Sorte". (Sorte: A Rain Forest area in Venezuela where, priests from different religions worship Indian and African mythical entities). With the first print the Negro Primero saves her from the street gangs. With the second one, Maria Lionza makes the captain of police, who wanted to displace her from her home, falls in love with her. And with the third one, José Gregorio Hernández, doctor to the poor, rescues her from the debris of her destroyed home after it collapse from a storm. Rosario awakes after eating the stamp in front of the gangs and with her market bag scares them away. Rosario still lives in the same barrio with her dog Ringo.
