The movie takes place in the early 18th century on the borders between Bosnia and Dalmatia, the crossroad between the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Venice. The streets of Zagreb are empty because of a rumored vampire who attacks lonely women. To the office of psychiatrist, Franjo Glogowetz, there arrives a strange visitor, Teobald Majer. He is convinced that he is a vampire from the 16th century, and tells Franz that the members of his family, Glogovac, were famous vampire hunters. Naturally, Franz does not take him seriously but his wife, Barbara, likes the stranger a lot and even believes his story. In the meantime, Franz's two relatives, Jambrek and Jurek, arrive and get caught up in the mess.

The lonely fat girl is so desperate for a friend and for a lover that she will end up seeking both in the pig-sty. The miser peasant will find out that the real misery is in loneliness.

The microcosmic world of a street market on the outskirts of Zagreb: traders, thieves, prostitutes, self-appointed security guards and other lost souls, each with their own unique ideas, passion or mania. We follow the tragicomic, mutually intertwined mini dramas of each character, as they fight to save the marketplace itself, when city planners threaten to raze it to the ground and replace it with a skyscraper.

Zagreb, Yugoslavia in 1890. A group of high-school students run away on an adventure that ends in scandal. The ringleader, Gusta, is expelled from school and sent to stay with his uncle in rural Turopolje. Here, a totally new world opens up to him, where the internal tragedies of the people are played out against the castle of Brezovica and a small town of wooden-framed houses. People end up in this idyllic exile because of some previous "sin" and try then to make the best of their lives there. But memories of the outside world impinge on their happiness.
