In the midst of a civil war, a pair of former violinists in a tempestuous marriage oversee a farm on a rural island. In spite of their best efforts to escape their homeland, the war impinges on every aspect of their lives.
The 1880s. Abandoned by his middle class parents in Stockholm, Johannes grows up in the countryside with a cobbler who regularly beats him up. Also at school he has to face regular beatings because of his Stockholm background, the only one who cares for him is a girl, Lotta, who promises to marry him one day. Ă…sa-Nisse is visited by cousin Doris from the United States. Nisse, Klabbarparn and Doris will travel to Stockholm, but Nisse and Klabbarparn lose track of Doris, who get into a hands of a Casanova. Nisse and Klabbarparn instead ends up at the Nordic Museum, where Ă…sa-Nisse turns out to have unexpected qualities in the art of imitating a mannequin. After that they had found each other is Doris robbed and it leads to a wild brawl that it sparkles and sputters on.

This, along with the fact that another girl starts to court Kurre puts their relationship to the test, a crisis which is easier said than done to solve.
