Haunted by tales of the supernatural, Vak­s­in can’t sleep and is found in the morning napping on the governess’s chest. (3) “The Avenger”. A husband plans to kill his unfaithful wife but abandons the plot when he dreads the punishment to come. (4) “The Proposal”. A tragicomic matchmaking tale of landowner Lomov wooing his neighbor’s daughter.

Saint Petersburg, 1858. A group of composers known as The Five meet at Balakirev's. Young Modest Mussorgsky, both a civil servant and a musician, has become a fixture there. He tells about the first opera he plans to compose. Then he goes to the country where he discovers the lowly conditions of the peasants and the bloody conflicts with the rich land owners. He works on Gogol's 'The Marriage', trying to render into music the natural accents of the play's naturalistic dialogue. But his efforts do not pan out. On the other hand, he starts writing his opera on the story of Boris Godunov. The Marinsky Theatre refuses to stage the work. The Five, and Mussorgsky among them, are libeled and the group starts disintegrating. When 'Boris Godunov' is finally performed in 1874, it is a popular success.

The construction plan for a small bridge has been disrupted by two weeks of heavy rains and a shortage of sand and gravel. The construction manager and Valentina Georgievna, his devoted secretary, long for good weather and wait for changes. And change is indeed coming.

In one of the regions of Latvia occupied by the Nazis, the Germans arrest a peasant boy named Janis. His first escape ends in another arrest. This time, he is detained by his younger brother, who has become a policeman. After his next escape, his wife Ilga and daughter are sent to a concentration camp. Now Janis is ready to do anything to save them.

The Immortal Garrison is set in June of 1941, at the outset of the Nazi invasion of Russia. A group of Soviet servicemen, languidly biding their time at the Brest fortress on the Polish border, are suddenly galvanized into action. All desires to return home to their wives and sweethearts are swept aside as the courageous garrison unites to thwart a common enemy. The siege of Brest has served as story material for countless Russian films: in lieu of contradictory evidence, Immortal Garrison must be adjudged the best of these films. For its American release, Immortal Garrison was double-featured with another Soviet production, The Mexican.

An endemic fever arose in the large Siberian construction area. Four scientists involved in the development of a vaccine against this disease, and whose laboratory was threatened with closure, are sent to the center of the outbreak. They manage to find the cause of the infection and create a vaccine.

Driver Mikhail meets Sofia, a distinguished collective farm worker who has come to Moscow. He helps her buy a car and agrees to deliver it to her collective farm. He is a widower, and she has separated from her husband. At Sofia's request, he agrees to take her, her daughter, and son-in-law back home. Mikhail develops deep feelings for Sofia, but her daughter is against it.

Russian folk tale about a father whose three sons go out to finds themselves brides. Two of the boys come home with perfectly normal girls, but the youngest brother, Ivanushka, brings home a frog from the marshes. His father finds this most curious, but what he does not know was that the frog was actually a beautiful girl named Vasilisa who was cursed by a magical serpent whom she refused to marry. Now Ivanushka must overcome tremendous obstacles to restore Vasilisa to her true form and free her from the serpent's spell.
