Biography
Pia Kirby is a published film critic and award winning filmmaker. Having worked as a critic for Film Ireland and the Young Irish Critics, as well as curating shorts programs for the Dublin International Film Festival and PRISMA Queer Film Festival, Pia Kirby has an extensive knowledge of filmmaking from both a production and criticism standpoint. They are most known for their recent film Same Old Meat (2024), which the script for the film was nominated for a National Student Media (SMEDIA) award in Dublin in 2024. Their 2023 film Hysterics won the 'Best Horror' award at The People's Picturehouse in Cork in 2024. Though their main area of expertise is horror, they are open to other genres as well. Pia Kirby is notable in that the special effects used in their films are often done by themself, since they are trained in practical effects, prosthetics and blood work. They have also worked on a few music videos as a production designer, namely Repent by the band 'girlfriend', and Weed Addict by the band 'Peer Pleasure'.
