In an unsightly tenement house, the walls of which are as peeling as the souls of the tenants, an old woman waits for her son to return from prison. However, her neighbors believe that she is hiding a large fortune in her tattered suitcase, which she protects like the apple of her eye, and they want to get hold of it at any cost.

A spring is hidden in the Iron Mountain but the people of Arzen cannot get to it and they are suffering from thirst.

Olga finds her husband Karel Brand, whom she has just divorced, shot dead after returning from the cinema. It appears to be a clear case of suicide, but Lieutenant Dusek of the Public Security Service suspects that it is a murder, which, it is not impossible, as a number of evidences point against it, could have been committed by Mrs Olga. A letter from the dead man to his wife seems to dispel any doubt that it could have been murder. Lieutenant Dusek, however, investigates further. Much more than he, however, learns about the true circumstances from Mrs. Olga's legal advisor, Dr. Klimesh. He learns that the letter is indeed a forgery and that Brand's death is linked to the raids of an anti-state gang. He hesitates for a long time whether to confide in security, believing that doing so would testify in favor of Dusek's theory that the murder was committed by Olga...

The growing conflict between the unruly owner of the villa and his lodger ends up in court. The cohabitation ends in bodily harm - and the film actually translates two versions of the same events, as seen by each of the parties involved. However, the attempt at morality, which proclaimed the necessity of removing the old survivals in people's thinking, did not quite work, and the testimony presented is at times a bit stiff.

After the study year, 18 year-old Julio returns to his parental home, a little chateau on the Otava river. There he converges with his childhood friend Petr and the young boatman's daughter Klárka. Labakan is a lazy tailor's journeyman dreaming of a life of luxury and dresses himself in fancy clothes for the rich emir, and when he sees how respectfully people greet him in the marketplace, he seizes the opportunity that unexpectedly presents itself. For he meets the Sultan's son Omar, who was brought up by the noble Cairo Pasha and is now returning home. Labakan steals the Sultan's dagger, his trademark, and sets out to find him. However, the Sultan's wife recognizes her true son and forces the Sultan to put both men to the test. Both have to prove their skill by sewing a coronation gown, which of course only the real tailor Labakan will be able to do, and so the executioner awaits him. Fortunately, it was all a dream and the foolish young man will make amends in time.

This underappreciated transcription of Smetana's opera surprises with its fresh originality, even compared to much later attempts to translate musical-dramatic works to the screen.

Trnka’s sci-fi vision of the future in which machines and robots try to substitute themselves into the most beautiful human relationships. A cybernetic robot is supposed to substitute for the loving grandmother of a little girl. The wise grandmother, however, comes back and the girl finds the warmth of her grandmother’s loving arms again. Trnka’s artistic ideas in this film can be described as both poetically fragile and dramatically cautionary.
