Ari Angkasa

Using archival footage from the European Union’s ban on all Indonesian airlines in 2005 and the series of aviation scandals plaguing Indonesia preceding it, along with family archives on VHS, Quantum Leap sees Angkasa perform the unreliable narrator embodied in a flight attendant. With her hair in a French twist and a classic kebaya uniform cinching her waist, the artist splits into two characters who speak different languages.

The medium is the message. A musical-comedy-thriller by the stalwart multihyphenate Ari Angkasa experimenting with the urgency of live performance as a medium for filmmaking in politically turbulent times.

The Overwoman reworks the cinematic trope of the femme fatale to explore trans-diasporic identity in a society drifting toward fascism. By subverting Nietzsche’s Übermensch—later appropriated by right-wing ideologies—the film critiques Western exceptionalism and examines how its myths shape and discipline queer existence.
