Director James Whale's last film, it was supposed to be part of an anthology film but was never released. A down on his luck gambler ends up in jail in a small Texan town where he meets and falls in love with Emily. They make plans to go to San Francisco but may not get the opportunity.

Joe spends a lot of his time at Nick's Pacific Street Saloon. Tom, who credits Joe with once saving his life, stops by regularly to run errands for Joe. Today, Tom notices a woman named Kitty when she comes into Nick's, and he quickly falls in love with her. Meanwhile, a distraught young man repeatedly calls his girlfriend, begging her to marry him. Nick himself muses on all the various persons who come into his bar, some to ask for work and others just to pass the time.

William Saroyan's Pulitzer Prize-winning play revolves around the denizens of a San Francisco bar in 1939. Lonely, lovelorn, weary or cynical, the characters drift in and out of the bar and each other's lives, giving voice to Saroyan's philosophies as they randomly comment about the impending world war, the beauty of art, and traditional notions of good and evil. At least one of the relationships stands a chance of enduring: a brawny innocent named Tom is falling in love with a vulnerable young prostitute named Kitty. Saroyan himself is heard reciting the play's prologue.

There's a guy sitting behind bars in prison. Through the bars, he keeps yelling: "Hey, somebody!" A girl appears at his shouting... She tells him that a bunch of people from the neighboring town are going to kill him for raping a woman. The guy tells the girl about himself: he's a vagrant because he's bored living in one place. He's very lonely. But the girl is essentially just as lonely. This brings the young people together and creates sympathy between them. The boy sends the girl away for a revolver, but when she leaves, the armed husband of the allegedly raped woman appears. The guy explains to him how it happened: the woman called him herself, but when he didn't give her money, she made a fuss. The husband believes the guy, but out of cowardice in front of his friends shoots and kills him.

The fourteen-year-old stubborn and arrogant Haik has a dream: to hunt a pheasant. For a long time he tried to a frazzle out his father's hunting gun for that purpose. Eventually he gets the gun. Already in the forest Haik understands it's not a pheasant hunt season; besides he doesn't know how to use the gun. As it gets darker, the colorful autumn wood turns into a cold and a frightening place, that the desperate boy strives to escape... Finally he manages to get a pair of superb pheasants. And perhaps something else, that is much more important.

Melik's uncle gives travel advice, specifying whom to engage with and whom to avoid. Melik during his whole trip does the opposite of everything he says.
