In 1848, the freedom-loving Hungarian people, led by Ludwig Kossuth, rose up against the hated rule of the Austrian Habsburg dynasty. In its expansionist policy, the Austrian monarchy had long relied on Hungarian feudal lords who betrayed the interests of their people. The anger of the rebels was directed against the Austrian oppressors and their Hungarian supporters. Against the backdrop of these historical events, the personal fate of the Hungarian patriot Maria Ilona is shown.

There’s excitement in St. Johann, when the lawyer and notary Dr. Junhnickel from Vienna arrives and brings an offer from a mysterious Brazillian: On the cover of a magazine is a young girl, obviously from the country, and in the background is the village landscape of St. Johann. The Brazilian has fallen in love with the picture and wants to marry the girl. In return for finding her, the village will receive a donation of RM 5,000. Oh boy! The mayor, the shoemaker and the district clerk go off on the search for the girl! They have absolutely no luck in the photo shop, because the photographer is boiling over what he considers unfair intentions and tells them to take a hike. Nevertheless, they find the girl’s address. The model, Christl Wallner is no country girl but rather a ballet dancer, who posed for the photo to earn a litle extra money.
Ten years ago, the "Andree case" was seemingly solved. Now criminal investigator Husfeld is to reopen it, as doubts have arisen about the guilt of Helga Andree, who was convicted at the time. She is said to have pushed her former rival, the singer Elinor Gyldenborg, off the roof garden and killed her. Husfeld seeks advice from his friend, the writer Volkmar Hollberg. He turns the case into a radio play, which is broadcast on the radio under the title The Jump from the Roof Garden. The broadcast brings back memories of the night of the crime for those present at the time...

She promptly falls in love with her savior and marries him. However, as the young wife of a busy doctor, Biggi soon feels abandoned. Professor Dr. Weiringk, her father-in-law, thinks little of her. She says she's only distracting his son from his homework. That's just one of the reasons for her decision to retake her high school diploma. Biggi secretly goes back to school. The double life as wife and student proves to be exhausting.

She buys a small laundry in Vienna and does everything she can to give her children a good life. When one of her employees becomes pregnant by one of her sons, she demands that the two marry. Another son has to leave home after an argument. The third son goes blind. For him, the mother makes her greatest sacrifice: she donates her cornea. Finally, she reconciles with the son who left home and, as a grandmother, can look back on a difficult but fulfilling life.
