Financial ruin stares Price and Holliday in the face. Holliday discovers that his beautiful daughter, Leonora, has just become engaged to Dr. Livingston, a young physician. The next day, Price, who is enormously wealthy in his own right, offers to save Holliday from disgrace and ruin on the condition that he receive Leonora's hand in marriage.

Paul La Blanc graduates from the seminary with high honors with plans to enter the priesthood, a much-desired outcome for his parents. But when he meets one of the local parishioners Rose Miqueleon, they are mutually attracted. An amateur artist Paul paints a picture of the Madonna, with Rose as the subject. When the portrait is seen gossip spreads and his parents are enraged at the thought, he might abandon the church. Events reach a danger point until Paul’s father sees the young pair in the moonlight and realizes the inevitability of events.

John Sprague, a promising young minister, wins the love and hand of a simple country girl, Margaret. Her father does not view the match favorably because of Sprague's rather advanced ideas on social relations and pleasure. He had earlier encouraged an amateur theatrical performance in which Margaret had made a success as Juliet.

Harry ignores her but Gardner is still in love with Elinor, and she realizes she cares for him. Harry is injured in an accident, calls for Elinor and begs forgiveness before he dies. After her mourning period Gardner proposes to Elinor and they marry.

Johnson, a pharmacist, makes an illicit traffic in cocaine and morphine, which he cleverly sells through his drug counter to a select clientele. In his richly furnished office, the head of the Kurson Chemical Company counts the receipts of Kurson Consumption Cure, a patented drug that contains a large amount of morphine.

"Coke" Morgan, a hopeless cocaine fiend with a brilliant but crooked mind, evolves a clever plan of wiretapping to separate the unwary from their money.

Old shoemaker Peter is beloved by the children in his neighborhood. His daughter, Rose, elopes with an artist named Harmon after Peter forbids their relationship. Heartbroken, Peter becomes embittered and loses his fondness for the children. Later, Rose returns, having been mistreated by Harmon, and Peter is reconciled with her, rediscovering his kind nature.

Dr. Alexander is dedicated to his young wife Isabel, but she craves a more exciting life and the company of younger people. This creates a rift between them with Isabel becoming increasingly distant. At a social gathering, she meets the artist Jack Welby and is drawn to him. As their relationship deepens, she considers eloping with him.

Two foreign spies are commissioned by their government to secure at all costs a secret treaty which is in the possession of the Ambassador of Venezuela.

Morton, encouraged by Watson, who wants to expel him from the bank, is the president who uses the bank's money for his private speculations. He gets very involved and when the matter is brought to the attention of the directors, he is asked to oblige to the default or go to prison. Morton would commit suicide except for his stenographer, Mary Lane, a beautiful and intelligent girl. She takes him in and discusses the matter with Morton's son, whom she loves.

Harry Horton, a spoiled son of a bookie, is prone to gambling and allows a weak character to influence him. His beloved father looks upon his son's character with more pity than anger in his heart. Harry mingles with a crowd of gamblers and loses money. Finally, in a big game, he loses every cent, and when he draws a check the bank tells him that there are no funds.

Ruined by Charles Wainwright, George Garrison commits suicide but begs his son Henry to avenge him before expiring. Henry goes West makes a fortune, then returns to New York. Assuming the name of Henry Thompson he becomes Wainwright's protégé and through his machinations is elected mayor of New York. For his support Wainwright wants a franchise binding the city to the financier's railway, but Henry refuses. Attempting to frame Henry on an old murder charge fails when the “victim,” Henry's partner Joe Standing shows up. Finally, Henry confronts Wainwright exposing his evil deeds. Wainwright’s daughter, Dallas, proclaims her love for Henry.

Little Sonny Brown returns to his wretched poverty-stricken home one day to find that his father has expired in his cups. Sonny trudges forth and falls by the wayside. Mr. and Mrs. Chatterton drive by in their auto with their little daughter Clara. They carry him home then place the boy in Clara's beautiful room, still fast asleep. The imaginative little fellow, who has never known the love and kindness for which he craves, dreams a most beautiful dream, in which he goes to the Court of Prince Make Believe.

After years of scientific research Thomas Kellner, an eccentric chemist, succeeds in manufacturing an imitation diamond, with the help of his son Jack.

US secret service agent Mr. Grimm is hot on the trail of spy Rosa Morini and her brother Prince Morini who are planning to sell a remote-control wireless bomb apparatus which if it falls into the wrong hands will make its possessor the master of the world's power. Rosa manages to elude capture at first but after the death of her brother sees the error of her ways and a crisis is averted.

Billiard nut Michael McCue arrives home intoxicated where his wife greets him with a shower of knives, forks and plates, which he skillfully dodges before she slams the door on him. He nods off on the hall sofa into a most beautiful if fantastical dream. He is back in the billiard parlor with his trusty cue and the pair go through some mad adventures until he is awoken by his wife, sorry for her harsh treatment.

Maurice Tourneur's first American made film is a silent drama about a mother's love and sacrifice starring Emma Dunn, who also starred in the 1910 Broadway play version of the story.

A character actress is struggling with age and the desire to save money while observing the manager's inappropriate advances towards the leading actress. She ultimately steps in to protect the young actress from her former husband's clutches.
