Dunet Chan Sheung Shing

The film is based on the Founder of Causeway Bay Books - LAM Wing-kee’s experience after he was temporarily released back to Hong Kong after 8 months of detention in Mainland China. LAM was demanded by the authorities to retrieve his computer in the bookstore in Hong Kong, alongside with the information of his customers. Only when he found out that his colleague handed over to him the wrong computer, should he start to think about possibilities besides submitting to authorities from Mainland China. The film re-enacts the events happened in the two days he was allowed to return to Hong Kong and explores LAM’s decision to defy, and refuse to leave his homeland.

Magical moments happen both in and out of the movie theatre. Ho is a dedicated film buff who works in an independent movie theatre. He is especially passionate about the classics which hardly attract any audience. One evening he notices an audience bursting into tears during the closing credits of the fourth film she has watched in a row. Ho checks on her but she remains reserved. Upon seeing all the old film copies in the theatre, she realises Ho’s passion for film and opens up to him.

I made June when I didn’t have any inspiration to create a feature film. The documentary is about the rarely known stories in the social movement in June. At first the clips of videos were kept for sorting out my feelings, but after being edited, they were made into a documentary and became a record of history. Six scenes and voices were used to tell what happened during that month.

High school student Faye leads a lonesome life, being bullied at school and her family living abroad. She keeps a distance from people, including her classmate Yiu whom she secretly admires. Yearning for love and desperate to break away from her mundane life, Faye becomes a part-time girlfriend named “Sushi”. A delicate dish on the sushi conveyor belt, Faye is coveted and manipulated by the assortment of men who seek her services. Her life is further complicated when Yiu suddenly confesses his affection for her on the phone. Navigating the tumultuous journey of love, will Faye finally be able to lift herself up, take the lead and find her way?

Still Life (2024) is a self-reflexive documentary and intimate portrait of renowned self-taught painter Yeung Tong Lung (b. 1956, Fujian), best known for his large-scale figurative paintings that capture daily life in Hong Kong’s busy urban landscape. With a cinematic quality, Yeung’s paintings compress multiple perspectives and spaces into one canvas, coaching his audiences in different ways of seeing. The film follows Yeung over a three-year period, including his preparations for his 2021 solo exhibition Daily Practice at Hong Kong’s Blindspot Gallery.

All clothes have a story to tell. Ma was about to close the Angela laundry shop for the day when Shum appeared. A young man with a head injury and handful of dirty clothes from his stay at the street during the Umbrella Movement, Shum needs his clothes washed. Full of passion for the social cause, Shum initially chided Ma for staying in the comfort of the shop. However, these two strangers slowly opened up to each other when a number of characters passed by the shop, revealing the tumultuous world behind Ma’s stoic silence. Shum also gained new insight on meaningfulness, which exists not only within a worthy cause but also at seemingly abandoned clothes.
