The film tells the story of two young people who chose different paths in life.

The peasant Juras Tarutis takes part in the struggle for independent Lithuania and in the election campaign for the Sejm, painfully experiencing the fascist coup in 1926. At first, he firmly believes in land reform and only after difficult trials, he become disillusioned with the reform and with the bourgeois system itself.

A fire suddenly broke out in a town that no longer exists. The zealous firehouse chief sends a brigade of firefighters to the blaze. However, a nasty local bureaucrat refuses to give them water.

A successful writer, Arvid Vinge, often finds himself in difficult situations because of his weakness for women. And every time his wife Elna comes to his aid, very cleverly saving Arvid from troubles...
