The heroes of the play are the father and son, the Raskatovs, whose lives are marked by the echoes of the past war: the father, a prominent military leader, dies from wounds sustained during the war; the son perishes while disarming a Nazi chemical weapons depot.

The television play centers around the character of the young, energetic collective farm chairman, Semyon Bobrov, who is passionate about the idea of creating a new village project. Bobrov involves architecture graduates in his plans to reconstruct the village, and among them, he meets Klara Veresova — his future wife.
