Kyohei Sorita

A tranquil tale about two boys from very different upbringings. On one hand you have Kai, born as the son of a prostitute, who's been playing the abandoned piano in the forest near his home ever since he was young. And on the other you have Syuhei, practically breast-fed by the piano as the son of a family of prestigious pianists. Yet it is their common bond with the piano that eventually intertwines their paths in life.

The Vietnamese orchestra was founded in 1959 to join people through music, unstopped by war and borders, but it had been facing difficulty surviving. Then in 1992, to rebuild the orchestra, fueled by the belief that "first-class countries have first-class orchestras," the orchestra leader invites Japanese conductor Sakura Kazuo to Vietnam to be their conductor. Together with interpreter Morioka Yuko, Kazuo works to overcome cultural barriers and aims to build a first-class orchestra while interacting with the unique Vietnamese members.

At the Salzburg Festival, Japanese pianist Kyohei Sorita will conduct the Mozarteum Orchestra from the piano in a concert entirely dedicated to the city’s musical prodigy. The program includes, among other works, Piano Concertos Nos. 9 and 27.
