A depressive director returns to his childhood countryside to prepare a new film, accompanied by an alcoholic producer. But things don't go according to plan, and ghosts from the past resurface.

Jonathan, 13 years old, spends his summer holidays at a mountain campsite with his mother. One afternoon, his mother sends him to walk the dog in order to receive her lover. The lover's son, accompanied by another teenager, makes Jonathan drink Pastis and drags him into a cruel and sadistic game. The humiliation will reach a point of no return and will mark all three of them for life.

This young couple knows vaguely that the love which bonds them can be their way of freeing themselves from the tenacious resentments and suspicions peculiar to this remote region of France, stigmatized as it is by a survival economy. But the social bonds that the adults forge are unexpectedly violent.

In a remote countryside in France, Hugo, a marginalised and drug addicted young man meets Sandrine, a single mother of a little girl. Quickly, they fall in love and for a while each of them has access to a form of peace and happiness. But the social and psychological tensions specific to their environment leave them little respite.
