Kujo Rina is a chemistry teacher and the homeroom teacher for the 3rd grade D class at Horai High School. She doesn't have a bond with her students. On the school's graduation day, Kujo Rina is pushed from the 4th floor and falls down. She is able to glimpse a school uniform sleeve on the person that pushed her. At that time, she wonders why she was pushed and that she does not want to die.
Kohei, a deaf university student, meets Taichi, an optimistic classmate who volunteers to take notes for Kohei's lectures in exchange for food. As they grow closer, their friendship blossoms into love.
Takashi Mikami, a University of Tokyo graduate, joins the Ministry of Education to reform Japan's education but is disillusioned by its reality. Transferred to a private high school, he takes a stand against the authorities, using his role as a teacher to push for change.

A lawyer is selected to be in charge of a retrial for a case surrounding the abduction and murder of a girl in Kagawa Prefecture 21 years prior. At around the same time, another kidnapping case arises in which a young girl is also abducted with no charges being filled, making Chisa one of the victims. With this, she sets foot in her hometown of Kagawa for the first time in 10 years and, with the help of her colleague, reinvestigates the incident that had occurred at the time, where there is a high possibility that the perpetrator was responsible for the same incident, having Chisa confront the suspect who may have once tried to kill her in order to uncover the truth behind the incident.

According to Sasano Shinzaburo, the chief yoriki of the Minami Magistrate’s Office, there are suspicions of a major conspiracy behind the scenes, and the authorities are taking the matter seriously. Trusting Heiji’s sharp insight, Sasano asks for his cooperation in solving the case. Around the same time, a traveling troupe that has been the talk of the town arrives in Edo. Their star performer, Tsubame, captivates audiences with her singing and stage presence. Heiji, Hachigoro, and Oshizu, who is close to Heiji, go to see the show and are enthralled. Yet Heiji quietly remarks, “There’s a loneliness in Tsubame’s eyes.”
