Biography

Milan Kundera (1 April 1929 – 11 July 2023) was a writer of Czech origin who lived in exile in France since 1975, where he became a naturalized citizen in 1981. He is best known as the author of The Unbearable Lightness of Being, The Book of Laughter and Forgetting, and The Joke. Kundera has written in both Czech and French. He revises the French translations of all his books; these therefore are not considered translations but original works. His books were banned by the Communist regimes of Czechoslovakia until the downfall of the regime in the Velvet Revolution in 1989.

"Power is sweetest when it is completely disproportionate – when a fool rules over the wise..." Kundera's play reveals in a farcical, even sarcastic way what drives people. For some, the most important thing is to submit and have peace of mind, while others need power over others to live. Milan Kundera says of his comedy Ptákovina that "it is a comedy so frivolous that it is more than a comedy: it is nonsense." Its intricate plot is set in motion by the Director, who draws a rhombus on the blackboard in the classroom. And it is discovered. An investigation ensues, and the all-powerful man of the city, the Chairman, also enters the game. This myth-shrouded comedy was only performed briefly in our country in 1969, and since then no one has officially seen it here. Until September 2008, when director Ladislav Smoček staged it at the Činoherní klub in Prague.

The main character of this ironic, intimate story about unrequited love is an older man, Adolf, who tells the story of his greatest failure in love. He has fallen in love with a young opera student, Janička, who, however, only has eyes for men who have a good position in artistic circles. Adolf hatches an ill-fated prank to introduce the girl to his friend Apostolko, a Greek worker. He passes him off as an opera conductor, and Janička falls in love with him. Adolf thus becomes the driving force behind events that ultimately turn against him.
