Yang Guo, an orphan, is taken by Guo Jing and Huang Rong to learn martial arts in Quanzhen Sect. But he is bullied, so he becomes a disciple of Xiaolongnü from Ancient Tomb Sect. Yang Guo and Xiaolongnü fall in love, but misunderstandings drive them apart. Yang Guo searches for Xiaolongnü and fights against his senior, Li Mochou. They finally reunite and decide to marry, but their love is not accepted by society, and they face many challenges. Yang Guo also learns the truth about his father's death and his own identity. After a series of trials, Yang Guo becomes a legendary hero.

The series revolves around the four Lin brothers, Lin Shangfu, Lin Shanggui, Lin Shangrong and Lin Shanghua. Shangfu, who works as a car salesman, narrowly avoids being laid off and begins a relationship with TV star Xia Chuqiao. Shanghua, a lounge singer, falls in love with a fellow music enthusiast, Sun Yide, but their relationship becomes complicated due to feelings between Shangfu and Yide. The Lin brothers also face multiple attacks from an unscrupulous artist agent, Lei Litao, but manage to overcome his schemes.
Sam Hui Special 1980 presents a string of Sam Hui's songs in story form, joined by guest performers including Teresa Carpio, Ricky Hui, Wong Ching, Kwok Lee-man, Eunice Lam, James Wong and Winnie Yu. In the story, Sam's boss demands that he write more than a dozen new songs. Drawing on everyday life and the state of society, Sam comes up with numbers such as 搵嘢做, which urges people to work hard to get ahead; 先敬羅衣後敬人, on the importance of dressing sharp; and 每事問, which teaches students to question everything in order to learn — plus 夜夜念奴嬌, 尖沙咀Susie, 這一曲送給您, 傀儡 and more.
