In the gritty world of the NYPD, no one's tougher than Detective Robert Ironside. A fidgety, wisecracking video store clerk develops a fixation on a particularly reclusive customer, a frequent visitor to the pornography section of Cinefile, the video store where he works in Los Angeles. After multiple failures to impress her during their brief daily transactions, he finds her street address in the store's database, drives to her apartment building and initiates an unconventional campaign to win her affections.

Day Is Done is a carnivalesque opus, a genre-smashing epic in which vampires, dancing goths, hillbillies, mimes and demons come together in a kind of subversive musical theater/variety revue. Running over two-and-a-half hours, this riotous theatrical spectacle unfolds as a series of episodes that form a loose, fractured narrative. The video comprises parts 2 through 32 of Kelley's multi-faceted project Extracurricular Activity Projective Reconstructions, in which trauma, abuse and repressed memory are refracted through personal and mass-cultural experience. The source material is a series of high school yearbook photographs of "extracurricular activities," specifically those that represent what Kelley has termed "socially accepted rituals of deviance." Kelley then stages video narratives around these found images.

Wayward actor, Jerry Stax is whisked away by concerned pal, Terry Ruggles, to a remote locale in deep Americana, where an enigmatic "Doctor" runs an extraordinary clinic for creative rejuvenation. While there, Jerry navigates his way through the various stimuli of the other curious "participants" and seemingly inexplicable methods of Dr. Buck. Soon enough, outside forces threaten the sanctity of Buck's operation, as strange familial ties and unquiet minds unravel.
