Biography
Born in Okinawa Prefecture in 1986. Graduated from the Japan Institute of the Moving Image. Studied under Toshiki Sato, who was his class teacher while attending the film school. After graduating, he became a freelance assistant director, working as an assistant director for directors such as Gakuryu Ishii , Ryuichi Hiroki , and Shinji Aoyama. "Dara Dara" (2022) was his first directorial work. He also directed episodes 5 and 6 of BS Shochiku Tokyu's "Can I Start with a Camera?".

Watarai seems like a respectable science teacher at a cram school in a decent apartment complex but he has the hidden habit he dare not reveal. That of peeping in on people’s private lives. This veritable watcher in the attic has a peephole surveillance system set up to watch his downstairs neighbours, Taro and Hanae Magara, a couple who are university lecturers. They appear perfect from the outside but the husband hides a secret that Watarai discovers ahead of Hanae and he finds himself sucked from the role of an observer into that of a participant in the fracturing of their relationship and worse…

The Great East Japan Earthquake suddenly changed the peaceful daily life of the people of Fukushima. Many people lost their homes and jobs due to not only the earthquake and tsunami, but also the nuclear accident, and left Fukushima. This is the story of a family living in the aftermath three years later, in Fukushima, where deep scars remain.
