The story follows Maria Konovalova who travels from her rural village to visit her daughter Nina in the city. Maria's arrival exposes the stark contrasts between rural and urban lifestyles and reveals deep-seated family tensions. Interestingly, Родня (Rodnya) in Russian sounds very similar to the word Родина (Rodina), which means "Motherland." The film features three generations of women — Maria, her daughter Nina, and her granddaughter Irina — symbolizing three different Russias: one from the past, one modern, and one representing the future.

Sergei Bukreyev arrives with a team of meliorators in another village and immediately draws attention to the director of the farm Anna Talnikova. Her dedication to work scares Sergei, he even wants to persuade her to leave the farm, but understands that Anna will never be happy without her work, and he – without it.

Starks returned after the conclusion of, met with his youthful love Tanya, who has a daughter Nelia over the years. Starkova acquaintance with the girl made him a different look at the relationship with Tanya and "ex-boyfriend".

The heroes of the play are the father and son, the Raskatovs, whose lives are marked by the echoes of the past war: the father, a prominent military leader, dies from wounds sustained during the war; the son perishes while disarming a Nazi chemical weapons depot.
