The eve of the 1905 Russian revolution was unquiet at the Skrobotova and Bardin factory. In response to the fair demand of the workers to dismiss the cruel and rude master, the masters close the factory and call in the troops. They shoot of one of the workers, who failed to restrain a rush of hatred towards the owners, ending Skrobotov's life. Gendarmes arrive at the factory. They succeed in uncovering the social democratic organization in the factory. The arrested workers oppose hysterical cruelty of gendarmes with calm, confident courage.

During the "Winter War" between Finland and the USSR, Galya's father goes to the front and she's left behind to take care of grandma and the house. Despite toeing the party line, the film was still banned by censors for being insufficiently patriotic.

The film recreates episodes from the December Uprising of 1825. Against the backdrop of the uprising, a love story unfolds between the Decembrist Annenkov and Polina Gebl.

The adventurous love story of Turgenev's illegitimate daughter Asya, who ran away from the estate to St. Petersburg with her lover, is intertwined with actual facts from the writer's life. The film has nothing to do with the novel of the same name.
